Elephant Transit Place, rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves mainly due to the human activities and large scale irrigation projects. Transit home being located within the Udawalawe National Park, helps orphaned elephant calves to grow with familiar habitat to them. At these transit homes, Wild elephants are accessible for both food and medical care by a well trained staff. Ultimately babies are released back into the jungle when they are big enough to survive themselves. Galle is a major tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. Udawattakele Forest Reserve is a very important Bio reserve being habitant for more than 606 varieties of plants, shrubs and lianas with a high endemism. 219 species of trees, lianas and herbs of the Udawattakele forest are reported to be endemic to Sri Lanka and also this area of forest is considered as an important bird watching place with having more than 80 species of birds with a high endemism such as Layards parakeet(Psittacula calthrapae), yellow fronted barbet(Megalaima flavifrons) Sri Lanka hanging parrot(Loriculus beryllinus), brown-capped babbler(Pellorneum fuscocapillus) and also you may see endemic mammals such as pale fronted toque macaque, Slender lorises, dusky palm squirrel, mouse deer. Flying Squirrels, Porcupine and Indian boar are also regularly seen in the forest.
Wasgamuwa is one of the most attractive natural park in Sri Lanka which was listed as a nature reserve in 1938. Wasgamuwa Park being a protected area for wild asian elephants and being one of the IBA (Important Bird Area) is a nature paradise for wildlife explorers. Wasgamuwa National Park hosting for more than 150 species of flora and Wasgamuwa has become an important habitant for more than 23 species of mammals, more than 150 wild elephants and also more than 145 bird species. Yapahuwa is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka. Yapahuwa being a palace and a military fortress and also being a remarkable Buddhist shrine, has become one of the main tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. In the earlier times Yapahuwa was called as the “Subha Pabbatha” which means in Sinhala as the “auspicious mountain”. In the year 1272, the first King Buvanekabahu transferred to Yapahuwa with his powerful army forces as a strategic to face the South Indian invasions. The first King Buvanakabahu, bringing the sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha with him, built the magnificent palace and the fortress around a massive granite rock outcrop, hundreds of meters over the surrounding lowlands. The biggest wonders to see there are the impressive stone stairway and stone sculptures of the great lions, elephants and dancing girls carved in the flanks of the stairway. These are considered to be one of the finest archaeological creations in the history of the Sri Lanka. Being steps in stairway are very narrow, you will find that it is very hard to climb the stairway and this is a clear trace of an ancient defensive system against the foreign invaders. You will also discover that the Yapahuwa has been fortified by two moats and by ramparts from the southern base of the Yapahuwa rock. Other important historical remains at the base of the rock are the scattered stone structures of Buddhist buildings and rock caves with Buddha images and Brahmi inscriptions.
