Wasgamuwa is a Great place to see wild life. The forests of Wasgamuwa falls under the Sri Lanka dry-zone dry evergreen forests. Wasgamuwa is one of protected areas where Sri Lankan Elephants can be seen in large herds roaming around the jungle. It is also one of the Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka. Wasgamuwa National Park is home to 23 species of mammals. The park is inhabited by a herd of 150 Sri Lankan elephants. Marsh elephant roams in the Mahaweli river area. Both monkeys found in the park, purple-faced langur and toque macaque, are endemic to Sri Lanka. While water buffalo and Sri Lankan axis deer are common to observe, Sri Lanka leopard and sloth bear are rare. Small golden palm civet is another rare endemic mammal. The number of bird species recorded from the park is 143. This includes 8 endemic species. Endemic red-faced malkoha is a resident bird in this national park. Sri Lanka junglefowl is another endemic bird inhabits the park. Lesser adjutant, yellow-fronted barbet, and Sri Lanka spurfowl are the species that visit the reservoirs and streams of the national park. Peafowl, painted stork, black-headed ibis and Eurasian spoonbill are the park’s other aquatic birds. Rare Sri Lanka frogmouth can be found here. Another rare species, chestnut-winged cuckoo, is seen near the Mahaweli river.

Minneriya National Park is situated in dry zone of Sri Lanka. The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in forests. You will enjoy the superb ride lies on bumpy roads in the jungle. After about half an hour, at the side of a huge lake You will see around 200 elephants, feeding from the grass very close to you. Elephant sightings in large herds are practically guaranteed here. Some reports account number of elephants to as high as 700. The park is an important habitat for the two endemic monkeys of Sri Lanka: purple-faced langur and toque macaque. Large herbivorous mammals such as Sri Lankan sambar deer and Sri Lankan axis deer are frequent in the park. Rare and endangered species such as Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear inhabit in Minneriya. Minneriya is one of the areas where the gray slender loris is reportedly found in Sri Lanka. The national park’s faunal species include 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and 75 species of butterflies. The main habitats of Minneriya are of several types, including low-canopy montane forests, intermediate high-canopy secondary forests, scrublands, abandoned chena lands, grasslands, rocky outcrops, and wetlands.

Sigiriya has become one of the main tourist destination in Sri Lanka and has listed as World Heritage Site. Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress with historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of rock nearly 200 metres (660 ft) high. Sigiriya is the Alakamandava (the City of the Gods) that was built up before 50 centuries ago by King Kuwera who was the father of Ravana. Sigiriya is world famous for its frescoes. The whole face of the hill appears to have been a gigantic picture gallery; an area of 140 metres long and 40 metres high, perhaps the largest picture in the world. There are references in the graffiti to 500 ladies in these paintings. Kandy city is the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the Secred Temple of Tooth. It is a Buddhist temple and is located in the royal palace complex, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Lord Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Traditional Kandian Dancing, classical dance forms are associated with performance of various rituals and ceremonies which are centuries old and are based on folk religion and folk beliefs going back to before the advent of Buddhism and its acceptance by the Sinhalese people in the 3rd century BC. Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, the finest of its kind in Asia, the largest of the botanical gardens of Sri Lanka. Peradeniya is at an elevation of 500 meters above sea-level, were tightly bounded on three sides by a loop of River Mahaweli (Great sandy river), the largest river of Sri Lanka. It is renowned for its collection of orchids. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchid spices, medicinal plants, Flower Garden, Bamboo Collection, The Lake and palm trees.
Sri Lanka was affectionately known as “Ratna-Dweepa” which means Gem Island and also Marco Polo wrote that the island has the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other gems in the world.
