Wilpaththu, is a must for animal and wilderness lovers being a big wildlife sanctuary with an area of 131,693 hectares. Wilpattu is the largest and one of the oldest National Parks in Sri Lanka with a wide variety of animals. Minneriya National Park is situated in dry zone of Sri Lanka. The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in forests. You will enjoy the superb ride lies on bumpy roads in the jungle. After about half an hour, at the side of a huge lake You will see around 200 elephants, feeding from the grass very close to you. Elephant sightings in large herds are practically guaranteed here. Some reports account number of elephants to as high as 700. The park is an important habitat for the two endemic monkeys of Sri Lanka: purple-faced langur and toque macaque. Large herbivorous mammals such as Sri Lankan sambar deer and Sri Lankan axis deer are frequent in the park. Rare and endangered species such as Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear inhabit in Minneriya. Minneriya is one of the areas where the gray slender loris is reportedly found in Sri Lanka. The national park’s faunal species include 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and 75 species of butterflies. The main habitats of Minneriya are of several types, including low-canopy montane forests, intermediate high-canopy secondary forests, scrublands, abandoned chena lands, grasslands, rocky outcrops, and wetlands.

Girithale Wild Life Museum being the first wildlife museum in the island, serves as a center to educate the local and foreign visitors on Sri Lanka’s indigenous wild life and its conservation. This museum is very helpful to learn about wildlife and ingenious animals. Indigenous animals in Sri Lanka as well as lesser-known information about them are displayed at the museum. Animal skeletons and around 70 replicas of indigenous as well as animals found in other countries are displayed here. Among the replicas, a significant one is the rare black leopard found in the Sinharaja rainforest. The skeletons of elephants, leopards, monkeys and deer and elephant foetuses are also in the collection.

Udawattakele is a historic forest reserve on a hill-ridge in the city of Kandy. Udawattakele is also known as “Uda Wasala Watta” in Sinhalese meaning “the garden above the royal palace”. The reserve also contains a great variety of plant species, especially lianas, shrubs and small trees. There are several giant lianas. You can have a great few hours enjoying nature at its best. There are many kinds of mammals. Endemic mammals that live in the sanctuary are the pale-fronted toque macaque (Macaca sinica aurifrons), golden palm civet, mouse deer (Moschiola meminna), slender loris, and the dusky palm squirrel. Other mammals are the Indian muntjac, Indian boar, porcupine (Hysterix indica), Asian palm civet, small Indian civet, ruddy mongoose, Indian giant flying squirrel, greater bandicoot rat, Indian pangolin, greater false vampire bat, and Indian flying-fox. Udawattakele is a famous birdwatching site. About 80 birdspecies have been recorded in the sanctuary. The endemic bird species are Layard’s parakeet, yellow-fronted barbet, brown-capped babbler and Sri Lanka hanging parrot. The rare three-toed kingfisher Ceyx erythacus has been observed occasionally at the pond. Common hill myna, golden-fronted leafbird, blue-winged leafbird, spotted dove, emerald dove, Tickell’s blue flycatcher, white-rumped shama, crimson-fronted barbet, brown-headed barbet crested serpent eagle, and brown fish owl are regularly seen and heard in the forest. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. Currently PEO has become one of the largest tourist attractions in the country due to its distinctive population of elephants. In 2011, there were 88 elephants, including 39 males and 49 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala.The orphanage was established to feed, nurse and house young elephants found abandoned by their mothers
